Outlook password loop fix (2026) – keeps asking for password

Waiting for an urgent email only to find your inbox broken is a nightmare—especially on a Monday morning.
My first thought was, *”Am I hacked?”* or *”Is this a virus?”* I tried to recover my passcode, but I got stuck in that never-ending loop where Microsoft Outlook constantly asks for your password, even though you’ve typed it correctly a dozen times.
It turns out I wasn’t alone. Yesterday, a global wave of users experienced this exact “password headache.”

If you’re currently frustrated, here is the lowdown on what’s happening and why my 2-hour struggle might save you some time.
**What I Tried (That Didn’t Work)**
Before I found the solution, I went through the classic “tech panic” checklist. Save yourself the trouble and **skip these** if you’re in the same boat:
* **Recovering the passcode:** Changed it, updated it—still blocked.
* **Clearing the Cache:** Cleaned out the system, but the loop remained.
* **Deleting and Re-adding the account:** A massive waste of time; it just asked for the password again.
* **Restarting everything:** Rebooted my phone and computer multiple times. No luck.

#### **Why is this happening? (It’s not a virus!)**
If your mail app keeps rejecting your correct password, it’s likely due to Microsoft’s shift to

“Modern Authentication.”** Microsoft is phasing out older, less secure login methods (Basic Auth) in favor of more secure systems. If your current mail app settings are outdated or configured via IMAP/POP, the server blocks the connection, leading to that infinite password prompt.
#### **The Solution: The Outlook App**
After all that frustration, the fix was surprisingly simple:

**I downloaded the official Outlook App.

** Hooray! It worked instantly. The app is designed to handle new security protocols seamlessly.

While it’s a bit of a hassle running two different email apps now just to access my old archives, at least I can finally read my urgent messages.

**Conclusion**
If you’re stuck in the loop, don’t waste your morning restarting your router or changing your password ten times.

Switch to the official app for a quick fix.
**Have you managed to fix yours a different way?

If you found another workaround, please let me know in the comments!**
